Girona Maps
Girona has to be one the the world's best places to ride a bike.

With beautiful climbs, quiet roads and thousands of km of gravel paths, this is cycling heaven.

There are certain classic routes that we never seem to get bored of. These are listed below, ordered by distance.

Monells, Catalunya
SHORT GIRONA ROAD ROUTES
~40km, about 1.5 hours

Fornells 41km
A nice flatish route that heads south out of Girona and returns on a busy main road. There's a good hard shoulder on the main road so it isn't too bad.
Hills: 248m Small rollers
Traffic: A bit busy towards the end

Adri 29km
Once you're out of Girona the roads are tranquil. You climb for what seems like an eternity towards Adri but it's worth it for the swoop back down to Girona.
Hills: 358m A bit of a climb up to Adri but worth it for the scenery 400m
Traffic: Can be a little busy around Girona but within a few km you're out of it

Cerla 41km
This is a flat ride used for TT practice or an easy day. It crosses a scenic bridge over a river. It is quiet outside of rush hour, so worth it if you want a spin, but not the most scenic route.
Hills: 267M Not many
Traffic: a mix of main roads and country lanes but generally quiet

Mas Llunes 36km
A nice little short climb that's quiet. Good loop to tack on extra km if needed or for an enjoyable cruise.
Hills: 259m Gentle climb to Mas Llunes. Otherwise fairly flat.
Traffic: Busy passing through Salt to the west of Girona, otherwise blissfully quiet.

LONG GIRONA ROAD ROUTES
~100km OR about 4 to 5 hours

Olot 115km
A classic pro loop. Contains numerous 5 min climbs which you can smash yourself up then recover a bit for the next one. The roads are quiet and scenic, allowing you to concentrate on the ride.
Hills: It's quite hilly. Mostly up to Olot then down to Girona
Traffic: Around Girona and Olot, otherwise quiet

St Grau 94km
Some busy roads but a quick way to get to the coast, see the castle at Tossa de Mar, the coastal road and the famous St Grau climb. It's hot and quite long but there's a flat bit on it.
Hills: 1227m A short climb on the way to Tossa, hilly on the coastal road then a fairly tough 7km climb up St Grau. Easy ride home.
Traffic: Main roads to Tossa but not too bad

Tossa - St Feliu - Bell-Lloc 112km
The classic coast road loop. 20km of hilly road with the Mediterranean on one side and hills on the other. One of the all-time-greats.
Hills: 1190m Rolling hills at the start then a long descent to Tossa. The coast road is hilly then you have the Bell-Lloc climb before retracing your steps back.

Platja D'Aro 99km
Our favourite loop all year round as it means going to the beach and Dulce Pikika for cakes.
Hills: 940m Rolling for the first hour then a short climb up La Ganga followed by a swift descent to the beach zone. On the way home you climb Bell-Lloc.

El Far 135km
A famous landmark. Spectacular views from the top at 1129m then a nice descent home.
Hills: 1804m climbs on the way out there, big climb up to El Far Cat 1

Rocacorba 72km
An iconic climb that many want to try. It isn't that steep, but the road surface in 2023 is a bit broken up and mossy, requiring care on the descent. Don't be a hero as people can and do drop off the edges. There'a great view at the top but no cafe. However around 2km from the top there's a fridge containing cold drinks. Pay at the honesty box. What a great business!
Hills: 1324m - a big one

Notable mentions
Cadaques
A famous town on the coast to the north east of Girona. A round trip is about 6 hours, but the issue is that there are lots of busy main roads and there's a climb to Cadaques which is narrow, twisty and busy. You have to do it on the way in and the way out. There are better options in Girona for bike riding.

Begur
A hilltop town, with attractive coastal roads and secluded beaches. However getting there involves fairly busy, straight, narrow and windy roads. Better options available in the area.

Romanya de la Selva
Great! Quiet climb. Worth doing.

Sant Hilari Sacalm
A favourite route, there's a 22km climb up there. Pros tack on a loop to Arbucies. A long descent back to Girona makes for a 100km day out.

Barcelona round trip
Plenty have done it. It's a flat 200km but more scenic options are available.

Andorra to Girona
Sadly it's not all downhill as there's a lot of climbing in there, but a nice one to tick off the list.
